Guest Author Interview
Every few weeks I post a guest author interview on my blog where we get a little peak into an author's life! This week we're chatting with Cathy Perkins, author of the Holly Price Mystery Series. Have a question for Cathy? Don't be afraid to leave a comment!
An award-winning author of financial mysteries, Cathy Perkins writes twisting dark suspense and light amateur sleuth stories.
When not writing, she battles with the beavers over the pond height or heads out on another travel adventure. She lives in Washington with her husband, children, several dogs and the resident deer herd.
1. How long does it take you to write a full novel? AND...what's a typical writing day look like for you?
My day job is demanding so I usually write at night. It takes me about a year to write a full novel. I keep hoping a miracle will occur and elves will type up all my handwritten notes, making the process much shorter.
2. Beside's writing, what are you most passionate about?
I'm passionate about volunteering and giving back to my community. For example, I've volunteered for years as a victim's advocate to offer support to every man, woman and child enduring what could be a devastating time. On a lighter note, my dogs, the great outdoors, tumbling creeks, and blue skies make me smile and my day brighter.
3. If you could travel to any location to write a novel, where would you go and why?
Le sigh. Travel in the time of a pandemic is a dream. While the Holly Price mysteries are set primarily in Washington state, after being quasi-quarantined for months, I'm having fantasies about Holly visiting... hmm... Australia. Or Croatia. For pretty much anywhere. Mystery adventures show up wherever she goes. 😉
If I could travel to write, anywhere there's a beach would make the best spot. Being able to walk along the shore and think through plot points is one of my favorite activities. Waking up to the sights, sounds and smells of the ocean is so inspiring.
4. What's the latest show you binge watched?
Shhh, don't tell anybody but I really don't watch television. I'd much rather read.
5. Tell us something most people don't know about you!
In addition to writing, I make fused glass items. I love the creative part of making things that play with color, texture and light.
A word from Cathy!
I'm often asked about the source of ideas. Story possibilities are everywhere - the news, random strangers doing strange things, or whatever drifts across your mind while daydreaming. My favorite is still the kernel of an idea for So About the Money.
My husband and I were out hiking along the Snake River and had to push through some thick foliage at the water's edge. About half way through, I glanced over my shoulder and said, wouldn't this be a great place to find a body? Fortunately, he laughed. But that started ideas going: How did the victim end up there? Why would Holly be there to stumble over the body? And the story grows from there.
Holly Price Mysteries
So About the Money romps through eastern Washington with its rivers, wineries, Native American casinos, & assorted farm animals. Add some wicked fun chemistry between the CPA amateur sleuth & a local detective & Holly better solve the case before the next dead body found beside the river is hers.
Thank you, Cathy, for joining us today and sharing a little bit of your writing process and a behind the scenes peek at your personal life 🙂
Don't forget, you can ask Cathy a question in the comments (I'll make sure she sees it) and of course shoot on over to her website where you'll learn more about her books.
